FACE Ag Network Higher Welfare Farming Principles

Farmers and ranchers participating in the FACE Ag Network are united in aspiration to animal husbandry principles that promote harmony between animals, the land and the surrounding communities, including:
  • Animals have free access to pasture and live forage for the majority of the year, as seasonably available and appropriate for the species. Animals’ breeds should be able thrive in the prevailing climate and in pasture-based systems.
  • Animals have appropriate housing and shelter where they can access shade and protection from inclement weather and aerial predators.
  • Any indoor shelter provides ample space for all animals to move freely and environmental enrichments for them to engage in natural behaviors, including forming social groupings and escaping aggressive animals.
  • Animals are provided pain control for painful procedures and, when possible, painful physical alterations should be avoided.
  • Animals have free access to clean water and food at all times. Animals are provided appropriate, unmedicated feeds and supplements free from animal byproducts.
  • Animals are provided prompt qualified medical care and treatment for injury and illness. Antibiotics and other medication are provided only when medically necessary and under the supervision of a veterinarian, and never as a growth-promoting additive.
